Sidney made her acting debut in the 2012 horror short The Babysitters, playing the supporting character Amity. She then made a cameo appearance as Kizzy Waller in the miniseries Roots, and soon after that, she was given the recurring part of Flora Harris in the horror television series American Horror Story: Roanoke, which was her big break.

Both games took place in 2016. Sidney played Raynell Maxson in the historical drama Fences and played Constance Johnson in the biographical drama Hidden Figures, both of which were released in December 2016.
