His fascination with the weather began when his mother took him on a tour of a local TV station in Yakima. As a high school student, he joined the Skill Center and began working in production at KIMA. In this job, he learned about the behind-the-scenes operations.

McCabe departed KIMA to continue his education at college. He then got a career in radio in Lewiston, Idaho. In 1996, KLEW recruited him as a part-time weather anchor, fulfilling his dream job. In 1998, he moved to Yakima and rejoined KIMA.
