Stockton Rush:Due diligence on OceanGate wasn’t necessary prior to the Titan implosion

One of Canada’s top ocean research organizations claims that before OceanGate Expeditions’ Titan submersible exploded in June, killing five people, the cooperation did not get to the stage of performing due diligence. If a plan had been devised wherein faculty or employees were invited aboard the submersible, The Marine Institute, a post-secondary institution in St. John’s, claims it would have investigated the corporation. That never took place.

According to a statement from the Marine Institute, there was no reason to investigate OceanGate because there were no intentions for staff members or students to be on board the Titan. When the Titan exploded, there was one student aboard the support ship Polar Prince. For the summer, OceanGate had employed the guy.

Early in 2023, the organization and the institution agreed on a memorandum of understanding. While the Marine Institute would reserve a room at its Holyrood facility to store the Titan, OceanGate would reserve space on the support vessel Polar Prince for students and researchers.

It’s sad that a student had to see the tragedy and its aftermath, says submersible industry veteran Will Kohnen, who co-wrote a letter in 2018 cautioning OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush against his experimental approach to Titanic missions.
