Toby Fox Career

Undertale, a 2015 role-playing video game for which Fox also composed the soundtrack, is Fox’s most well-known work. The game sold over one million copies, making it a “breakout hit” and a “pop-culture phenomenon.” To avoid relying on people, Fox worked on the entire game himself, with the exception of the visual assets, which he requested Temmie (Tuyoki) Chang to help with. Before Undertale, he had some experience in game production, creating role-playing games and EarthBound ROM hacks with his three brothers in high school, the most prominent of which was Earthbound: The Halloween Hack. He came up with the character designs and ideas for Undertale while in college, drawing them in his notepad.

Fox published a bunch of unused Undertale musical recordings in 2016. He also became a contributor to the publication A Profound Waste of Time. Fox was later named to the 2018 Forbes 30 Under 30 list for his involvement in making Undertale. Due to the success of Undertale, particularly in Japan, Fox was able to pay a visit to Super Smash Bros.Ultimate against each other, with the two reportedly having a comparable skill level, trading wins and losses evenly. Sans, an Undertale character, was later added in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Mii costume purchasable through downloadable content, as well as the orchestral composition “Megalovania,” which Fox composed.

On October 30, 2018, Fox asked Undertale fans to check the game’s official Twitter account in 24 hours. The following day, Fox released the first chapter of Undertale’s sequel, Deltarune (an anagram of Undertale), for free as part of a “survey.”On November 1, Fox revealed more information about the game, including the fact that the remaining chapters were scheduled to be released concurrently, but work had not yet begun, and there was no estimated completion date. Fox also revealed that he has been working on the project since 2012 and that the idea for Undertale arose during the production of Deltarune.

On June 12, 2019, despite the fact that just the first chapter of Deltarune had been playable for several months, Fox expressed hope on his Twitter account that he would finish the rest of Deltarune, saying: “Slowly I’m writing and drawing it all out.” He added that he has written “about 50 songs past Chapter 1”.

On September 17, 2021, Fox made the second chapter of Deltarune available for free since “the world has been really tough for everybody recently,” referring to the COVID-19 epidemic. He intends to release the remaining three chapters concurrently, for a total of five chapters in the final game, for a higher price than Undertale, but with no set release date.
